Gutter care tips and questions

A little attention each season keeps water away from your siding, windows and foundation.

A gutter calendar for Connecticut

Spring

  • Clear winter debris from every gutter and downspout.
  • Look for gutters that sag or have pulled away from the fascia.
  • Run water through the system and watch for drips at seams and corners.
  • Check that downspouts carry water well away from the foundation.

Summer

  • Trim branches that hang over the roof.
  • Look for rust, peeling paint or loose hangers.
  • Check roof flashing and caulk around chimneys and skylights.

Fall

  • Clean the gutters after most leaves have dropped.
  • Flush downspouts and elbows until they run freely.
  • Make sure guards and screens are seated and not packed with debris.

Winter

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts before the ground freezes.
  • Check that downspout outlets are open so water can leave the roofline.
  • Look for loose hangers or gutters that have pulled away from the fascia after storms.

Gutters are high off the ground. If you are not comfortable on a ladder, let us do it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. Estimates are free and come with no obligation. Call us or send the estimate form and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

What is a seamless gutter?

A seamless gutter is formed from a single coil of metal on a truck at your property and cut to the length of each run. A long straight run has no joints along it, which removes many of the places where older sectional gutters start to leak. Corners and downspout outlets are still joined.

Which towns do you work in?

Mostly Fairfield County, Connecticut, from Greenwich to Danbury. We also work in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. If your town is not listed on our service areas page, call and ask.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year, usually in late spring and again after the leaves come down. Houses under large trees often need it more. Cleaning is also the best moment to spot loose hangers and leaks.

Do I need gutter guards?

They help if you have a lot of leaves or pine needles, because less debris reaches the trough. No guard removes the need for cleaning completely, so we will tell you honestly whether guards make sense on your roof.

Which gutter material should I choose?

Aluminum suits most homes and budgets. Copper and zinc cost more but last a very long time and age beautifully. Vinyl is the lowest cost but is the least durable in cold weather. We can show you each on site.

Are you insured?

Yes. RP Gutters is locally owned, operated and insured, with a professional and bonded team.

Do you work on commercial buildings?

Yes, residential and commercial. We have installed gutters, copper and roofing on office buildings as well as homes.
